You will read in traditional astrology that during a Mercury retrograde(rx) cycle, things seem to shake things up in a very odd way. Suddenly, technological glitches, stalls, or things not working out as we’d like them start happening. The train gets stuck on the railroad at the exact moment you had to drive through there, streetlights don’t function properly, email did not go through, and there seems to be a certain chaos that can only be linked to this retrograde madness! HOWEVER--- from an evolutionary perspective, there is a deeper meaning to these retrograde cycles. In evolutionary astrology a retrograde planet takes on an “Uranian” undertone, meaning that it serves to decondition and liberate you from past patterning that no longer serve you. It serves for you to reflect, rebel and redo certain aspects of the archetype in play for you to continue to evolve and individuate. Mercury’s function, from a soul level represents how we intellectually order the nature of our existence. You are likely reading this article on a computer or a phone; yet have you ever thought about how you knew to call that thing you are reading from a computer or a phone? That is the function of Mercury. It is our left brained, rational and linear thinking pattern. It is how we discern through all the information we know and consume, and how we communicate those things we perceive from our perspective. Mercury goes retrograde approx. 3x times a year for approx. 3 week at time, giving us multiple opportunities throughout the year take time and clean up the nature of our thoughts and how we have been communicating and interpreting situations. In the natural zodiac, Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo, giving us an opportunity to evolve those functions through their opposite signs Sagittarius and Pisces. With Sagittarius, we are learning how to interpret wisdom from our learnings on an intuitive level, and with Pisces we are learning the lessons of surrendering, letting go and understanding that we are all part of the same oneness. Together, this makes up the mutable cross which prepares us for adaptability and change. Considering that retrograde periods are a time to internalize everything for reflective purposes, this gives us an opportunity to rethink certain decisions, revisit behaviors, re-evaluate circumstances, relationships, etc… where can we begin to make changes and free ourselves from limiting patterns? It is an opportunity to prepare for CHANGE(which is the signature of the mutable quality)
This retrograde falls in the sign of Leo and will last from July 18th until August 11th – This period gives us the opportunity to reflect on where or what we have been identifying with or holding on to from a subjective point of view that needs some transforming. This could also be a specific behavior or trait you have been wanting to change. Any areas in life we have been more selfish, more dramatic or self-centered in. Knowing what house this transit falls in on your natal chart, along with what aspects it’s making to your natal planets will give you more clues and insight into the theme or area of life. For example: If it falls in your 7th house, these themes will be felt in your relationships with other people. It is important to embrace this moment and use it as an opportunity for change. During this cycle, the challenge and solution will be to take an OBJECTIVE stance:
By taking an objective and detached point of view (which is one of the lesson of Aquarius, Leo’s opposite sign); we are able to zero in on what is it we could improve, redo or re-evaluate. Take yourself, and your personal feelings out of the equation for a moment. It’s going to be easy to point fingers, but this cycle invites us to point the finger back towards ourselves. This will require that we look at everything from all angles, rather than just your own. It is not a simple task. We will most of the time always gravitate to look see things from our own point of view… and during this retrograde cycle in specific in Leo, we will be even more tempted to only see things from our point of view. We will be tempted into thinking our way is the only way, and that we are the one who is right. Beware of falling into that trap.
One way to detach yourself, is to meditate on a specific scenario or circumstance you are challenged with, and visualize it happening to others without you involved – remove your feelings, and your personal experience; just see it for what it is, like watching a movie. Swap the roles around and see what changes. See it play out in different manners. Listen to all perspectives.
By removing your subjective point of view and feelings, you are able to see things for what they are, which gives you new perspective, courage and wisdom to begin to make a change that will benefit you for the good. In evolutionary astrology, we always look to the opposite house/sign for how to evolve a certain archetype. For this retrograde, it is the sign of Aquarius, which is ruled by Uranus(Mercury’s higher octave). A higher octave of something means it is the higher frequency or vibration of that object. This reconfirms yet again, that this cycle has the power to liberate you from stagnating patterns that we have been holding on to stubbornly, thus evolving it into a new, more passionate, higher vibrating, creative and transformed being.
